Five days photographing Milan with Carlo Oggioni, a story to follow through the city, and at the end of it a body of work that becomes your own published zine.
A workshop that ends in print
Milan 27 is built around a publication rather than a set of lessons. Before the trip Carlo sets a theme, a thread for the week that each photographer follows in their own way. Then five days in the city, one district at a time, with Carlo alongside as guide, editor and second pair of eyes. Afterwards, two editing and sequencing sessions shape what you made into a zine of up to twenty pages, printed in an edition of thirty to fifty copies and published by M2M, Carlo’s imprint.
The route follows the ring of the Navigli, the canals Leonardo redesigned in the fifteenth century. They circled the old Roman city until they were covered over a hundred years ago, and the street that replaced them still traces the loop. Walk it and Milan opens up in layers: the courtyards, workshops and neighbourhoods that show what the city was five centuries ago, most of them absent from any guidebook.
What the fee covers
Five days on the ground
Each day the group works one district. Carlo talks through its history, how people have used it and what it has become, and where the photographs might be, always in the light of the story each photographer is telling. Then it is your walk. He stays close, reading frames with you as the day unfolds rather than in a critique at the end.
Your own zine
Up to 20 pages, 30 to 50 copies, edited, sequenced and published by M2M. Delivered within 30 days of the layout being signed off. Extra copies can be ordered.
Two sessions after the trip
Back home, two one‑to‑one sessions with Carlo to edit and sequence: which frames carry the story, in what order, and what the zine needs to be. Included in the fee.

A group small enough that Carlo knows every project by the second morning. Any genre within the theme: street, portrait or documentary, with the city’s architecture as the setting.
A local’s Milan
Courtyards, workshops, bars and streets that are public but rarely visited, chosen from Carlo’s own knowledge of the city he grew up in, and for what each place gives the story.

What a day looks like
Before the trip, Carlo shares the theme for the week, a thread each photographer follows in their own way. Each morning the group meets in that day’s district. Carlo opens with the place itself: what happened here, who passes through, what has changed and what has not, and where that history meets the story you are telling. Then you walk and photograph. Carlo moves with the group inside the day’s perimeter, looking at frames, asking questions, and helping you find the thread again when it slips. Weather changes nothing; the district does. The day ends when the light does.
Gear
One camera body and two fixed prime lenses, no zooms. The week is about learning to see a photograph rather than construct one. Film or digital, as you prefer.
Language
The workshop is run in English. Carlo was born and raised in Milan and speaks Italian, so the group has a native guide in the city.

Milan. Participants arrange their own travel and accommodation. Carlo recommends where to stay once the itinerary is set.

Four participants at most.
Price
AUD 2,500 per person. A 50% deposit holds a place and the balance is due before the workshop.
Cancellation
Full refund up to 14 days before the workshop begins.
Included
Five guided days, the theme and itinerary, mentoring throughout, two post‑trip editing sessions, and the design, printing and publication of your zine in an edition of 30 to 50 copies.
Not included
Travel, accommodation, meals and insurance.
Rights
The photographs remain yours. M2M holds the publication rights to the zine.

Committed enthusiasts through to working photographers. No portfolio is required.
Your mentor
Carlo Oggioni is a photographer and publisher based in Melbourne, born and raised in Milan. He began photographing protests and rallies for an Italian newspaper in his twenties, studied visual communication in Italy and commercial photography at Melbourne Polytechnic, and has spent the past decade shooting for agencies and brands in Australia. As a publisher he has produced four photobooks, including his own Behind This Line, and represents artists at Australia’s photobook fairs. He also spent six years working with Leica.
